Varnish Software, Intel Achieve Breakthrough in CDN Efficiency with 1.5 Tbps Per Server Throughput at 1.4 Gbps/Watt

Collaboration sets new industry standards for performance and energy efficiency, driving sustainable solutions for content delivery networks (CDNs).

Los Angeles, CA – September 25, 2024 – Varnish Software, a leading provider of high-performance content delivery software, today announced the results of its latest collaboration with Intel to deliver unprecedented content delivery network (CDN) performance and efficiency using Intel® Xeon® 6 Processors. The partnership highlights the power of optimized cache software with the Intel Xeon 6 Processor family to enhance CDN operations, positioning it as an ideal solution for Communication Service Providers (CoSPs) and other high-demand industries.

With a growing demand for rich, low-latency content and the growing importance of energy sustainability, Varnish Software and Intel conducted extensive testing to demonstrate how next-generation processors can improve CDN throughput while reducing environmental impact. The tests, conducted using Varnish Enterprise caching software, showed significant performance improvements, reaching up to 1.5 Tbps in throughput and 1.4 Gbps/Watt in energy efficiency, particularly for video streaming use cases.

Conducted on Supermicro Rackmount Servers, the testing compared the performance of Intel Xeon 6 Processors against previous generations, highlighting their capacity to reduce server counts, decrease power consumption, and improve overall system efficiency. Varnish Enterprise, built on open-source frameworks and optimized for deployment at the network edge, was central to this testing. The software’s flexibility, capable of operating in virtualized, containerized, or bare-metal environments, made it the perfect choice to demonstrate the potential of Xeon 6 processors for edge-based CDN deployments.

“At Varnish, performance and efficiency have always gone hand in hand, but the latest results from our collaboration with Intel set a new standard.” said Frank Miller, CTO, Varnish Software. “The kind of throughput we’re hitting, coupled with the energy savings, is exactly what our customers need as they scale. It’s not just about raw speed anymore; it’s about being smart with resources, and this partnership with Intel is helping us deliver on that promise.”

With rising demand for high-performance content delivery, Varnish Software is committed to using cutting-edge hardware and software to meet the evolving needs of today’s workloads. This collaboration with Intel demonstrates the potential to optimize content delivery in a more sustainable and energy-efficient manner.
